DISCOVERY CENTRE

 

The 10 000 square foot building is nestled between the historic citadel and guest parking lot, offering panoramic views of Cedar Island, Deadman's Bay, Cathcart Tower, and Lake Ontario. The innovative centre features modern interactive exhibits with projection and touch screen technologies, a new retail store, guest cafe, as well as a 2 200 square foot Great Hall with adjoining two-tier outdoor patio and BBQ area.

PUBLIC WEAPONS FIRING

Fort Henry will offer the visiting public the opportunity to fire historic weapons on site again this year. Public firings will take place at three times during each day of the summer season, booking must be done on site. There is the opportunity to fire both a 12-pounder artillery piece and a Snider Enfield Rifle.

  • A fee of $49.99 plus tax will be charged for the firing of the artillery piece (1 shot).
  • A fee of $19.99 plus tax will be charged for the rifle firing (3 shots).
 
Daily Activities Include:

Flag Raising:

Join us to start the day as “Reveille” is played and the flag is raised.

Cannon Blasts:

At the times listed, watch as a cannon is fired from the East Battery in the lower fort. Be sure to set your watch to the firing of the noon gun!

English / French Guided Tours:

This complimentary guided tour explains the advanced defences of the fort and a glimpse of garrison life in 1867. (Time: 50 minutes)

Garrison Parade:

At 2:30 p.m. we invite you to join the Officer of the Day to watch the Fort Henry Guard perform their daily spectacular show. Parade includes a cannon firing. 
(Time: 25 minutes)

Victorian School Lesson:

NEW! Get Involved! Do not be late for school! With the ringing of the school bell, go back to 1867 and attend class. Afterwards, under the supervision of the teacher, practice writing a letter home, which you can mail from The Garrison Store. 
(Time: 45 minutes)

Meet our Mascot David:

Get Involved! Please stop by and say hello to our beloved goat David X, the mascot of the Fort Henry Guard. David commemorates the services of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, who were stationed at the Fort in 1842-1843.

Muster Parade - Join our Army:

Get Involved! Time to join the Regiment! Let the Fort Henry Guard train you into becoming a soldier, and learn your drill. Receive a certificate for your performance - if you are good enough. Convince the Sergeant that you deserve “Fort Shillings”, redeemable in our gift shop.
(Time: 20 minutes)

Rifle Firing:   

Learn about the use of small arms by the British Army through the 1800’s. A live firing of a Snider - Enfield rifle culminates this demonstration. 
(Time: 15 minutes)

Public Weapons Firing:

 

End of Day Ceremonial: 

Take the opportunity to fire a rifle or cannon used by the Fort Henry Guard. (Extra payment required - some restrictions apply)

Join us for the lowering of the flag and a cannon firing, as we conclude daily programming for the day.
