Plan a field trip to Fort Henry this school year and give your students a unique educational experience.

Fort Henry offers the opportunity for students to experience much more than just history lessons. Your classroom will be moved to a British Fort interpreted during the year 1867, Canada's Confederation and experience life at the Citadel of Upper Canada. Our costumed interpreters will help your class understand how and why people at Fort Henry lived the way they did.

The Bonnycastle Tour

This 60-minute program gives students a chance to come face to face with soldiers in Her Majesty's Army of 1867. Queen Victoria's Army was the beginning of what we recognize as the "Modern Army". Surrounded by the Fort Henry Guard in Infantry Red and Artillery Blue uniforms, they will be put through their paces with an in-depth expedition of the Citadel of Upper Canada.

This guided visit will provoke curiosity by explaining why and how the Fort was built, how it was expected to defend itself, and students will also learn about the lives of the people who once lived here in 1867, a garrison of soldiers and their families.

Offered May through September.

Victorian Education Program

This 90 minute program gives your class a chance to become a soldier in Her Majesty's Army. After a one-hour guided orientation tour of Fort Henry with your tour guide being either a soldier or a soldiers’ wife of 1867, your class will participate in two modules or vignettes of 15 minutes each, including a schoolroom lesson from 1867 as soldiers had to be able to read and write in order to get promoted and Officers were expected to earn their rank rather than buy them. As such, the Army took care in educating both the soldier's children and the soldiers themselves.

This will be followed by a muster parade where your student will learn basic foot drill and how to march like a soldier.

Offered May through September.

Garrison Life Program

This is a 3-hour program, where students go back in time to the year 1867 and pretend to be new recruits who have just been posted to their new home, Fort Henry.  The program includes a one-hour guided tour of Fort Henry, with your tour guide being either a soldier or a soldier’s wife of 1867. All students will be issued a military jacket as they are now soldiers in Her Majesty's Army.

Wearing the Infantry Red and Artillery Midnight Blue, your class will be put through their paces with basic foot drill and then put to work. Following the tour, muster and schoolroom lesson, the Squads will then "Fall In" on the Parade Square for final inspection and will receive their discharge papers at the end of the program for their resumption to civilian life.

Soldier's Overnight Program

No classroom experience will equal the excitement and fun of the Soldiers' Overnight Program. It is by far the premier learning experience we have to offer. Immerse your students into the lifestyle of Fort Henry's garrison, exposing them to actual routines of the 1860's.

In essence, your students will become soldiers for 21 hours at the Citadel of Upper Canada. Your students will be provided with interpreters who will take you back in time to teach and guide your class in their experience as soldiers in the British Army in 1867.

Activities that your students will participate in will allow your students to immerse themselves in the living history and fully appreciate the experiential learning: guided tour, issued uniforms, muster, schoolroom, fatigues barrack room inspection, ghost tour, flag raising and lowering and history hunt /historical detectives.

View Teacher Package

NOTE: Because of the nature of this program, we must insist that you provide at least a 10:1 student supervisor ratio; male and female. From 8:00 pm on day one, your class will be under teacher supervision. Fort Henry can provide some historic materials for this period, but it is essentially geared for "Quiet Time" before lights out. Feel free to bring cards, dominoes, and draughts (checkers) for each Barrack Room. Teachers might also want to supply paper so that the soldiers may write home.
